Souls are eternal. They cannot be destroyed, only created by the Father.
By this logic, Dean Winchester’s soul is the same.
On the night of November 7th, 2058, Dean breathes his last breath. His weathered hand is cradled between Castiel’s and wrinkles line Dean’s face. They remind Castiel of the old maps that were shoved in the impala’s dashboard compartment. The impala doesn’t work anymore but Dean insists that Castiel keeps it in a garage, so he does. Dean makes Castiel promise that they will see each other again and as always, Castiel does what Dean wants.
Dean Winchester dies with a smile on his face.
The next time they meet is at a coffee shop in Brittany, France. Dean is blonde and brown-eyed, downing a cup of strong tea in the sunlight. His nose is a bit crooked and he is shorter than Castiel but the soul inside the body is the same. All bright and hunter green.
Castiel sits down and finds out that Dean’s new name is Evan. He is married with two kids, a dog and no memory of Castiel.
Evan dies at the old age of eighty-six with five grandchildren. The meeting at the coffee shop long forgotten. Nobody notices Castiel with his trenchcoat standing at the very back of the funeral.
They meet again in Russia. This time, Dean is wheat-blonde. Soul fitted nicely into a girl’s body. He is all loud and tall grace. His name is Maia now and Castiel savors it on his tongue. Maia falls in love with Castiel and they live together. Happy for a very long while.
When Maia dies, Castiel doesn’t find the next reincarnation and he roams the earth alone for one hundred and eight years until the next one.
It continues like this. A search, a calling between soul and angel. Sometimes Castiel doesn’t find him, sometimes they fall inlove again. Other times, Castiel can only watch from afar as Dean lives his life, grows old without Castiel by his side. Then there are the long years when Dean’s soul doesn’t roam the earth.
But Castiel always waits. He promised.
